WHAT IS KUNG FU?

In Kung Fu, the word Fu means ‘that which comes from the heart’.  One other analogy of the words ‘Kung Fu’ is ‘stop fighting’.  The western perception of the meaning of Kung Fu has been greatly twisted over time.

There are 2 kinds of Kung Fu. There is Shaolin Kung Fu, which comes from the Buddhist and Taoist Temples, and then the other one is from family styles or Gar styles.  These were not spiritually based and practiced with a different meaning; I can only talk about Shaolin.

Within Shaolin Kung Fu the monks trained for varied reasons.  Firstly, they trained to protect other people and not themselves.  This eliminates aggression and violence. They trained to perfect their own bodies, in turn to perfect the mind, in turn to perfect the heart. These 3 principles are essential to achieve real mindfulness and atonement to the earth and the universe.  Kung Fu also builds the energy of courage, which is missing today in many people.  As the practitioner moves in Kung Fu they create shapes.  These moving, continuous shapes can be likened to the shape of a pyramid or torus, which attract universal energy.  By perfecting these movements with the honourable and humble thinking of the heart, it produces a more spiritual and balanced person.  Each morning as one wakes to a new world, they must practice to attune themselves to the energy of the new day.  This is only some of the meanings on the road to achieving enlightenment.

Lineage and History of Lung Ying Dragon Sign Kung Fu

The teachings we give to any who wish to learn are over 2000 years old and have been passed down unchanged through generations of monks, and students, through family trees and now to everybody who wishes to learn.

Originally, these ancient teachings were developed and practiced by Shaolin Monks. These monks were both Buddhist and Taoist practitioners. They recognised that all movement needed to be studied; both earthly and celestial; and the relationship between them. They practiced these movements for health of body, mind and acceptance of the heart.

When the communist party came to power in 1949, the Shaolin Monks were persecuted and hunted down, seen as a threat to the communist regime. By 1966, most of the temples were bombed or burnt down, the monks were executed, jailed and tortured, and the teachings suppressed. Continue......
